Redang Island

Redang Island (Pulau Redang) is one of Malaysians' favorite tourist destinations; famous for snorkelling and diving.

The travel season for Redang is from March to October.

Getting There

  • Plane
    - the only direct flight is operated by Berjaya Air, with priority given to their Berjaya Resort's customers.

Alternatively you can take a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Trengganu; and then from Kuala Trengganu take a taxi to Merang to travel by speedboats to Redang.

  • Buses - travel by bus from Kuala Trengganu and take a taxi to Merang.

  • Boats - the main port is at Merang, around 30km from Kuala Trengganu. Speedboats are used as transportation and will take around 30-40 minutes to reach the island. The sea can be rough sometimes, take anti-motion pills if you are worried of seasick.

Get Around

Most travellers normally spend their time around their resort area. There are no real roads in Redang, but just a jungle trail that connect the north and south of the island. It's uncommon to charter a boat to carry you around, but it can be negotiated with a huge price tag.

Attractions and Experience

  • Snorkelling is the most common activity at Redang, and perhaps Redang's main attraction as well. Almost each resort will have their own boats to carry their customers to snorkelling spots on schedule, normally 2-3 times a day.

  • Diving - Redang is probably not the best location for season divers, but a favorite spot for beginners. There are a few scuba diving operators that actually provide diving courses and exams for a diving license.

Stay and Facilities

  • Stay - Most Redang tourists travelled to the island with packages offered by travel agents or from the resorts, normally for 3D/2N or 4D/3N. Most packages will cost RM180 to RM320 for 3 days 2 nights.

Our editors' pick is Redang Reef [ website ] or Berjaya Resorts [ website ] for accommodation.

  • Food - depending on your travel package, food might be included (some packages provide up to 5 meals a day). Else each resorts will have their own restaurants, with the prices normally doubled the standard from mainland because of the difficulties to get the raw food to the island.

  • Drinks - tap water is not drinkable. Some resorts provide cooked water for free; else just buy bottled waters from the shops. Most of the resorts have a bar selling liquor and beer, but nightlife is not common activity at the island.

Miscellaneous

  • Topless sunbathing is very uncommon in Redang and is highly not recommended.
